World Flight Completed Double Hop Yesterday - Arrived in Tokyo, Japan

Daily Report

by Lt. L. H. Smith Commanding

At 12:40 p.m. [May 22nd], the flight departed [Minato]. A few minutes after the take-off, the "Chicago" developed a battery short, forcing the flight to turn back. The "Chicago" landed, located the trouble immediately, while the "Boston" and "New Orleans" remained in the air. At 1:00, a new start was made, the flight following along the eastern coast of Honshu until it reached Ostura; then overland directly to Kagoshima, a Japanese Naval Training Station for both land and water planes. Excellent arrangements had been made by the Japanese Navy to care for the planes as best they could with their equipment, it not being suitable for Douglas airplanes. A very large reception was planned, about 15,000 people being present to witness the landing, among them being the Admiral in Command of the Japanese Navy; the Japanese Secretary of War, and the American Naval and Military Attachés, Major Phillip R. Faymonville and Lieut. Commander Garnet Huelings, respectively
